On 9th October 2026, a memorial bench for Dr David Lawrence was officially opened on Cubbins Green, overlooking the Dee Estuary.
David was born on 13th June 1945 and worked as a Consultant Respiratory Physician. He was a long serving member of the Caldy Society and cared deeply about Caldy and the surrounding area. Those who knew him remember a true gentleman, warm and kind, and always passionate about looking after the place he loved.
David passed away in January 2025, and his funeral was held at Caldy Church that February. Soon afterwards, the committee agreed that a bench would be a fitting way to remember him and leave a lasting mark for everyone who walks this stretch of the coast.
Working closely with David’s wife Magdah, who chose the spot, the Society arranged the bench with Wirral Council. A special thank you goes to Gill Peters and Pat Whearty, who did so much to make it happen.
To mark the occasion, Magdah was joined by Derek Machin, Pat Whearty, Donald Lamont and Nick Geary to pop a bottle of bubbly in David’s memory. A rainbow stretched right across the sky above the estuary. It felt like the perfect way to remember him.

Next time you’re out on Cubbins Green, take a seat on David’s bench at the far end, enjoy the view across the Dee,
and spare a thought for a lovely man who gave so much to our community.
